Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT) is advancing through final design and approaching construction and operation. The construction and operation of the system will bring new career opportunities to the Charleston area. Skilled workers will be needed for these jobs, and the time to prepare is now!

Potential Job Opportunities

There are various job and career opportunities generally associated with bus rapid transit (BRT) systems. Job opportunities will be available during the system’s construction phase and when the system becomes operational.

Many roles will be employed directly by contractors, firms, and businesses outside of CARTA or BCDCOG. The education and/or training requirements for these jobs will vary depending on the job title, but many are likely to require a high school diploma; associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree; certification; or some combination of those.

Jobs and career opportunities for LCRT will be split between construction and system operations. Construction on LCRT will begin in 2027 and the system will open to the public in 2029. The LCRT project team will provide updates on employment opportunities and timing on this website as they become available.

During construction, many jobs may be employed directly by contractors, engineering firms, and businesses outside of LCRT’s operator (CARTA) and program sponsor (BCDCOG). The LCRT project team will work with these outside organizations to provide employment information and resources on this website as applicable. During system operations, CARTA and BCDCOG will conduct hiring for employment opportunities.
