Making Headway: LCRT Continues to Advance in 2024

The LCRT project is moving full speed ahead in 2024, kicking off the year with momentum as the project team continues to work through the Engineering phase.
Over the next few months, the team will continue developing design plans and will emphasize collaboration and engagement with communities and stakeholders. Here’s what we’ll be working on through the next few months:
- Continued coordination with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and local and state agencies to keep moving the project forward
- Completion and delivery of 60% design plans, which will expand on details of the project
- Ongoing engagement with communities, neighborhoods, elected officials, and businesses to ensure that the community remains informed and involved in the project

An involved community remains crucial to the success of LCRT
One way that we ensure our communities are engaged with the project is by attending public and community meetings happening locally. In early 2024, Charleston County hosted five public meetings to inform the public on proposed projects that will be fully or partially funded by the sales tax program.
Our team attended each of these meetings to engage with and inform community members from across the region on LCRT’s funding, features, and timeline:

Did you know that LCRT will be partially funded by the Charleston County sales tax program? In November 2016, Charleston County voters approved a half-cent sales tax to fund roadway, transit, and green space projects. Part of this funding will be used for LCRT, and this local funding is also being used to compete for further federal funding grants through the FTA. The new 2024 sales tax referendum will also contribute to the LCRT operations budget.

TAKE THE DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON TRANSIT STUDY SURVEY
How would you like to change transit service in Downtown Charleston? CARTA and BCDCOG have been developing concepts to make it easier to get around by transit, based on an evaluation of the system and community input received last year. Draft network concepts are now ready to share, including potential changes to local bus and DASH routes. Take the online survey now through March 13 to weigh in on proposed changes to your route and share your ideas to improve the system.
Later this spring, the project team will revise the draft concepts and add detail with recommendations on frequency, hours, and infrastructure to support the proposed changes. Click here to learn more about the Downtown Charleston Transit Study.

El proyecto de Transporte Público Rápido de Lowcountry o LCRT (Lowcountry Rapid Transit) avanza a toda velocidad en 2024, comenzando el año con ímpetu a medida que el equipo sigue trabajando en la fase de ingeniería.

Una comunidad involucrada sigue siendo crucial para el éxito del LCRT
Una forma de asegurarnos de que nuestras comunidades participan activamente en el proyecto es asistiendo a las reuniones públicas y comunitarias que se celebran a nivel local. A principios de 2024, el condado de Charleston organizó cinco reuniones públicas para informar al público sobre los proyectos propuestos que serán financiados total o parcialmente por el programa de impuestos sobre las ventas.

¿Sabía que el LCRT será financiado parcialmente por el programa de impuestos sobre las ventas del condado de Charleston? En noviembre de 2016, los votantes del condado de Charleston aprobaron un impuesto sobre las ventas de medio centavo para financiar proyectos de carreteras, transporte público y espacios verdes. Parte de esta financiación se utilizará para el LCRT y esta financiación local también se utilizará para competir por más subvenciones federales a través de la FTA.
